Air Conditioning at its most complicated can involve control of all aspects of the air within a space, controlling temperature, humidity, cleanliness, air quality and the distribution of air within the room. Most air conditioners are much simpler than this and are used to maintain a comfortable temperature using refrigeration to cool and heat the room. While we can supply much more complex, so called, applied systems our main business is the supply of what we call ‘split system or minisplit heat pumps’.
A split system heat pump uses an indoor unit, connected to an outdoor by wiring and pressurised refrigeration pipe. This uses refrigeration to either cool the room down or heat it up by ‘pumping’ the heat either to or from outside. This makes it very efficient as it takes only 1KW of electricity to pump around 3KW of heat to heat or cool the room.

Minisplits are available in two different types, based upon the technology they use.

So called fixed speed systems are so called because they are either on or off and consequently are fairly uncomplicated, cheaper to buy and simple to fix but also tend to be more expensive to run. But given that even an E rated system will still give 2.5 times the heat output compared with power input this is still very cheap to run compared with conventional heating methods.
An Inverter system throttles the amount of heating and cooling to match the output with the demand to reduce power consumption and they are typically more complicated and expensive than a fixed speed system but higher efficiency, often B or C rated.
A High Efficiency Inverter system uses the latest technology to reach either A or B energy ratings.
